Like many busy middle aged women, my weight had crept up over the years of rushing around juggling work and home life in spite of practicing a reasonably healthy diet and lifestyle. I have always been focused on nutrition and natural approaches to health and wellness. I was a vegetarian for 13 years, used herbal medicines since my twenties, studied meditation in university, eaten organic food as much as possible, and generally been what you’d call a “health nut”. I even practice and teach a natural method of birth control based on fertility awareness. So, body literacy and self-care have been solid foundations in my entire adult life. Working in a pharmacy gave me an understanding of blood sugar and fat storage, and I had been selling supplements that claim to help with weight loss my whole career, but applying this knowledge to my own life had never seemed to make much difference. Why was I overweight and feeling old in my early fifties? Like anyone else, a combination of factors were at play; stress, alcohol, lack of exercise, night time snacking, too many carbohydrates, not enough protein, and so on. In this respect, my story is no different from most privileged middle class ladies with access to the normal indulgences of our all-you-can-eat western culture.
When my employer, Tammie Toriglia decided to bring the Ideal Protein weight loss program into our store as an extra service we would offer, I was mildly interested. When she asked me to try the program myself, I was surprised and slightly embarrassed, but mostly curious in an academic way. I approached it as an experiment with me as the subject. Luckily we were able to hire a coach who already knew Ideal Protein and Jenn taught me what I needed to do. I started Phase One of the program in the middle of January 2015 and found it was easy to follow the instructions; I just did what I was told and did not cheat. Keeping a logbook and checking in for weekly weighting, measuring, and coaching were important to keep focused, but it was not difficult to lock in to the routine of eating as instructed. Mostly I just went on with my life. At first, I didn’t pay much attention to the numbers and didn’t get too invested in the changes that were going on. When I went below 200 pounds for the first time in over 10 years, I took notice... On my second day of IP I was exhausted. Jenn had told me it takes three days for your body to transition into ketosis and I could feel it. I had my usual brownie, black coffee, morning supplements and salt breakfast then got started with my day. The pre-made packaged food made work mornings too easy.
Drinking enough water was a huge challenge for me. I can drink as many glasses of wine at dinner without a care in the world but when it came to drinking water I struggled. Peppermint tea and hibiscus tea were my saviours. Peppermint tea was great for digestion and added enough flavour to my water to make it interesting. The hibiscus tea is a beautiful pink color that helps trick your mind. It looks almost like a rose if you drink it out a wine glass (WARNING - do not drink out of a wine glass if it before 5pm, people may give you weird looks). It’s a bit tangy but I would often add extra lemon especially if I was craving fruit. The mangosteen supplement is great to boost your energy if you find yourself hitting a low point during the day. I found it a bit sweet to add the whole packet so I only added a bit of a pack at a time. The night before I mixed up a batch of muffins using the Maple Oatmeal Packets. My biggest weakness is needing something sweet with me tea or coffee. For lunch I had four large muffins, 1 cup broccoli salad (1 cup of zucchini in muffins counts as select veggies) with the Walden Farms balsamic dressing. I found I also liked the dressing more if I mixed them or diluted them with soy or apple cider vinegar. I also snacked on some fresh daikon and cucumber during the day. I never even tried the oatmeal its own because a friend of mine who’s on IP turned me onto this recipe: Ingredients: 1 Ideal Protein Maple Oatmeal Packet 1 Egg – beaten 1/2 tsp Baking Powder Pinch of Salt 1-1/2 tsp Cinnamon 1/2 – 3/4 of small zucchini finely grated. you may need to squeeze out the extra juice. I also added 1/2 cup rhubarb a couple times making these muffins. It makes then very moist. TIP – Make sure you use cupcake papers because these muffins like to stick to your pans! Directions: Beat the egg in a bowl. Add Maple Oatmeal, baking powder, salt , Splenda, cinnamon, and zucchini. Mix and gradually add water until you have a good batter. Bake at 385°F (200°C) for 20 minutes. Makes 3 regular muffins or12-bite size. The muffins saved me on so many occasions. Often one batch of muffins makes 4 large muffins but I made lots of mini muffins. I’d usually have the muffins as my IP snack food and have them in between meals when I needed something to tide me over. The 1 egg = 1 oz of your dinner protein. I also found you could make different muffins by subbing the Maple Oatmeal protein pack for the puddings. I even made double batches (keeping in mind you are using two packets so any muffins yielded need to be split into two meals and 2 eggs = subtract 2oz out of your dinner protein) where I would add one Oatmeal pack and one chocolate pudding pack. They turned out okay too! After work I had my cappuccino drink with cold coffee on my way home and completely crashed when I got home! I napped from 530-830! When I woke up I baked 7oz chicken breast (subtracted 1oz egg from muffins earlier in day) with Mrs Dash seasoning. For my select veggies I had steamed broccoli and mushrooms. I panicked when I realized I had forgotten to have my olive oil for the day and actually gulped it down on the spot. I don’t recommend it. The smarter idea would be having some extra greens and mixing one of the Walden Farms dressing with the daily intake on olive oil. Lately, it seems everyone is talking about Ideal Protein, the weight-loss plan du jour. It’s so popular you can even find Ideal Protein items on the menus of several area restaurants. So, exactly what is this diet protocol and what makes it so popular? “Ideal Protein is a weight-loss program that’s about losing weight and keeping it off,” says Melissa Martin, a registered dietitian and nutrition services manager at Woman’s Center for Wellness. “The diet works differently with each person, but it’s consistent in that dieters don’t plateau like they do in most weight-loss programs, and that’s great because we’re an immediate gratification society.” Woman’s Ideal Protein protocol comes in four phases. The first phase targets your habits and behavior, and is followed until 100 percent of your weight-loss goal is achieved. “It’s nutrition on autopilot,” says Martin, who has done the diet. “It’s very restrictive and allows you to change your behavior. You eat only vegetables, lean protein and Ideal Protein products. That’s when you really lose the weight” Read more.... Day One Phase One
My first tip is one passed on by my mother: ALWAYS over prepare. (She’d laugh knowing I wrote this, so don’t tell her.) The night before my first day on Ideal Protein I got 7 large plastic bags and labeled them with the days of the week. I carefully selected three ideal protein foods (1 restricted, and two non-restricted) for each day. I even found small pill cases to put my morning (multi vitamin and potassium), evening (multi, omega, and calmag), and snack pills (calmag). I measured out ¼ tsp salt for each morning of the week. I went a step further and cut up more phase one acceptable veggies than I have ever seen in my life, let a alone, eat in one week. I weighed my select veggies and put them into separate baggies in the fridge. IT WAS THE BEST THING I COULD HAVE DONE! It made my Ideal Protein process so easy and stress free. The only thing I had to think about was my 8oz of acceptable dinner protein. AM- The best part of the Ideal Protein diet for me was learning to eat enough food throughout the day, starting with breakfast, a meal I often skipped. I’m a serious latte drinker. I take coffee seriously and when I don’t have coffee I become a scary monster that my friends and family can attest to. I was only allowed 30ml of milk in my coffee in the morning. I tried not to seem disappointed at the still mostly black coffee in front of me. I was dedicated so I said to myself -"Focus on your goal and find an upside" My upside? I got to eat a Double Chocolate brownie for breakfast! I gloated to my mother about my delicious breakfast brownie as she laughed. I didn’t even notice I was basically drinking black coffee. I still barely notice that I drink black coffee. In fact, I enjoy coffee so much more now. NOON- I found that I kept staring at the clock around 1130 because I was starving. I would usually grab a cookie and a cup of coffee and go about my day but on Ideal protein I couldn’t do that. I knew my lunch break wasn’t going to be until 2pm and I knew I couldn’t possibly make that. I grabbed one of my unlimited veggie packs and scarfed down as much celery as I could. I also made a clear tea and drank some water to help fill me up. At lunch I wanted something more solid than a drink so I reached for my chocolate pudding pack. I always add a bit more water than the package says because I prefer the consistency that way. I also munched on some cut up jicama with cinnamon and lemon sprinkled on it. Jicama was helpful when I craved fruit because it is similar to an unripe pear. It’s very refreshing and has a nice crunch like an apple. My body wasn’t used to not eating whenever I wanted so I was super grouchy at about 5pm. I usually have late dinners due to work hours so I struggled on my way home. I picked up an Iced Black Americano (Grande in a Venti cup – IMPORTANT TIP with extra water – more room to help mix it and make it go further) from Starbucks and mixed in my cappuccino drink that was supposed to be my after dinner snack. It gave me enough energy to get through the grocery store without succumbing to temptations and to make dinner without biting anyone’s head off. PM- I made it home about 730pm and started dinner! I had the gentleman at Thriftys to weigh out 8oz of salmon locks so I wouldn’t have to. I mixed the salmon locks with 2 tsp olive oil, raw garlic, raw onion, capers and apple cider vinegar. I loaded my plate with greens and my select veggies were orange pepper and broccoli. I also threw in some celery and raw mushroom to up my unlimited veggies intake and to add some different textures to the salad. IT WAS SO GOOD. Everyone around me was actually jealous of my salad. I had the best dinner than anyone at the table by far. The important thing- I survived the first day and its challenges! Let me know how your Day One Phase One went in the comment box below!

If I’m being honest, my ideal diet would actually be not dieting at all, but realistically we all have those times where we hit a point of “I weigh more than I would like to.” Then comes the hard part: What kind of diet do I want to choose. Usually the first answers that come to mind are: easy, quick, and “but I still really want to have wine and ice cream.” Now usually the first lesson of dieting is we can’t have our cake and eat it too but I’m here to tell you that you can. The cake might just come in the form of an Ideal Protein Double chocolate brownie heated in the microwave to perfection.
Ideal protein isn’t necessary easy (though it’s not hard either), but I can’t argue with the results. I lost 13 pounds within two weeks! Compared to everyone else around me, losing thirteen pounds was pretty minimal. The best part? I felt better. I quickly learned what people have been trying to tell me for years: "your body works better when you put the right things into it." Really? You mean healthy food actually makes you feel better? I honestly just thought my mother was out to get me as a child as she scooped brussel sprouts onto my plate. My work took on Ideal Protein and I watched the changes around me. People kept shrinking!. Of course I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I didn’t want to lose much, I’m small to begin with, but I wanted to lose something. I wanted to lose that voice in my head, the one that nags us all and tears away at our self-esteem. The voice that says “I’m fat.” Join me on my Ideal Protein Journey.
